THE BRANDES INSTITUTE SEEKS ACADEMIC PAPERS FOR THE 2020 BRANDES INSTITUTE PRIZE

Graduate students and professors are invited to submit original research for a chance to win $20,000 in prizes

SAN DIEGO, 13 MAY 2020 – The Brandes Institute, the thought leadership division of Brandes Investment Partners, today invited current graduate students and professors to submit original, unpublished research for the 2020 Brandes Institute Prize. Entries will be considered for a chance to win a $15,000 first prize and a $5,000 runner-up prize.

The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2020. All papers must be submitted to BIPCFP@Brandes.com.

The annual essay competition seeks to uncover new ideas and research to further expand the investment community’s understanding of market behavior, and enhance the conversation around value investing. Entries must include an abstract of fewer than 500 words that summarizes the issue, methodology and solution, and should focus on one of the following topics:

  • Benjamin Graham-based principles solving a current problem for investors.
  • Behavioral biases when investing and practical approaches to counter—or exploit—these biases.
  • A current issue and solution related to corporate governance.
  • New perspectives for retirement plan structure, investing and/or distribution for institutional or individual investors.
  • How crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic create opportunities for active value managers.

“We are excited to once again accept entries for our annual Brandes Institute Prize, and encourage all students and professors with an interest in market behavior and Benjamin Graham’s guiding principles of value investing to apply,” says Bob Schmidt, Manager of the Brandes Institute. “At Brandes Investment Partners we believe that thoughtful research and analytical insights can promote important conversations about the many diverse aspects of investing and portfolio management.”

Winning entries will be selected by the Brandes Institute Advisory Board. In addition to $15,000 the winning author will receive consideration for publication in one of the Institutional Investor Journals, quarterly publications focusing on global finance and investment themes.
